Police save a driver as her car sinks into Georges River

Incredible footage shows the moment police saved a woman who had driven her car into a river west of Sydney.

Officers were first called to a domestic violence incident just after 2pm on Sunday, and were told a woman involved was behind the wheel and possibly on drugs.

Using a police helicopter, she was soon found along the Georges River, in Georges Hall – about six kilometres west of Bankstown.

But when officers arrived, the woman drove the car off of a boat ramp, crashing into the water.

Police are seen in footage filmed from the POLAIR helicopter swimming out to the woman and smashing in the drivers side window of her black hatchback.

Splashes are seen in the water as the woman comes to the surface, just as the car sinks into the river.

Five officers are seen surrounding her as she faces the point where her car became enveloped by the river.

Footage taken by bystanders shows officers helping her back to land and walking her up the boat ramp to safety.

She is now being treated by paramedics at Bankstown Police Station.

An officer is in Bankstown Hospital being treated for a cut on his wrist, sustained during the dramatic rescue.
