Real Madrid stars pay tribute to outgoing captain Karim Benzema

‘One word above all… legend’: Real Madrid stars past and present pay tribute to Karim Benzema as club announce he will leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer… with Man United defender Raphael Varane hailing his former team mate

Karim Benzema’s teammates of the past and present have taken to social media to react to the news that the French international is leaving the club.

The 35-year-old announced his decision to depart the Spanish giants at the end of the season, and has been heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Madrid revealed that the club are set to  hold a tribute and farewell for their captain in the city on Tuesday to honour his successful spell with the club.

Several of his teammates have taken to social media to react to the news, with Aurelien Tchouameni kicking off the tributes by labelling him a legend on Twitter.

Fellow France teammate Raphael Varane got in on the action, releasing a longer message to his former Real Madrid colleague as he wrote: ‘Goals, memories, trophies and respect. One word above all… Legend. Good luck in your next chapter, frérot’.

Karim Benzema could join Cristiano Ronaldo by playing in the Saudi Arabian league

Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois paid tribute by posting ‘KB9’ along with a white heart, signifying Benzema’s relation to his club.

Brazilian duo Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr. added to the post on Instagram, both commenting with crying emojis as they bid farewell to a club legend.

While it is unclear as to what the future holds for Madrid’s captain, Benzema is reportedly set to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad on a two-year deal worth around £345m.

The potential move would see the 35-year-old face off against former teammate and friend Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League.

It remains to be seen as to whether a move will materialise, with several alternative clubs sure to be circling for the Los Blancos icon.
