Recruiter says companies DON’T hire ‘best candidate’ for a job – looking for ‘least risky’ person

A recruiter has said that companies often don’t hire the ‘best candidates’ for a job – claiming that interviews are actually all about proving you are the person with the ‘least amount of risk’ instead of how qualified you are for the position.

Runa Jiang, a hiring manager based in the U.S., often shares various tips and tricks for scoring a new position and giving the best answers in job interviews to TikTok, where she has racked up more than 11,000 followers.

However, she left the internet stunned when she admitted that recruiters often don’t look for the most qualified employees, but instead, the people who they believe will last the longest.

She explained that hiring managers don’t get paid more depending on how well the people they hire perform, but if they give someone a job who quits soon after, it looks bad on them – so they’re often on the hunt for people who they think pose the ‘least amount of risk.’

She shared her findings in a TikTok video which has since gone viral on the streaming platform, gaining more than 479,000 views and surprising many social media users.

‘Did you really think that companies try to hire the best most qualified candidates? Well they don’t, and I can let you know why,’ she began in the clip.

‘As a hiring manager, they don’t get paid more because you perform outstandingly. But they do get penalized if their candidates keep quitting early or disobey authority.’

Runa added that people with the most ‘experience and intelligence’ are often the ones who leave a job the quickest, so sometimes what can seem like a positive quality can actually negatively impact you during an interview.

‘What kind of candidates quit early or disobey authority? Usually the ones that are the smartest or most qualified in terms of experience and intelligence,’ she continued.

‘So if they don’t want to hire the best candidates out there, who do they want to hire? People with the least amount of risks.

‘And that’s what interview questions are – they’re meant to measure your risk. “Why did you leave your company?” measures your risk of leaving again. “What is your biggest weakness?” sees how bad you can screw up. It’s all psychology.’

Many people were shocked over her admissions and took to the comment section to share their thoughts, with some viewers thanking Runa for sharing her expertise.

‘This is really helpful to know,’ wrote one person, while another added, ‘I finally understand why you can be “over qualified.” If used to baffle me hearing you can fail getting a job for being too qualified.’

A third comment read, ‘I’ve never heard this but it makes so much sense.’

Others agreed with Runa’s findings, with one person writing, ‘The smart ones know when to jump ship.’

‘I’ve been told by hiring managers that I’m a “flight risk” because of my qualifications,’ shared someone else.

‘As a hiring manager, I can confirm,’ added another person.

A different user agreed, ‘Yep they want the safe performer who takes orders, not someone to out think them.’

Runa said in the comment section of the video that there are some hiring managers who are ‘fair’ and ‘choose the most qualified candidates’ out there, adding, ‘If you are one of them – kudos.’

‘This is just pointing out that big company’s reward and performance systems do not motivate this kind of human behavior,’ she explained.

In other videos, the recruiter shared more advice on how to do well in interviews and impress your potential new boss, and she even addressed direct questions that are often asked by recruiters and revealed how you should answer them.

When asked during an interview what the biggest challenge you have ever had to overcome is, Runa suggested that you focus on the challenge itself rather than the ‘steps you took to overcome this challenge.’

‘They don’t care how you overcame previous challenges, they just want to know that you have been actually challenged,’ she said.

‘If the biggest challenge you have ever experienced in life is like a group project, that means you actually haven’t been challenged in life at all and you’re probably gonna fail under pressure. Regardless of how you overcame it, they care more about the challenge itself.’

When a hiring manager asks how you work in a group, Runa said it’s not a good time to show that you take initiative.

She added, ‘What they’re looking for is a team player. What they’re measuring in this question is your ability to fit in the different holes and needs within a team.

‘That doesn’t always mean you’re the person who’s taking initiative. It could mean that you’re the person who’s staying silent because there’s lots of ideas going around.’

On the other hand, when an interviewer wonders how you handle conflict within a team, Runa said it’s important to not use the word ‘conflict’ in your answer.

‘The word conflict has a negative connotation and you using the word is admitting to the negative connotations it’s associated with,’ she shared.

‘Conflict is a disagreement that escalated due to emotions. But are you someone who will escalate due to emotions? No you’re not.

‘In this case, you don’t have conflicts, you only have “disagreements.” You want disagreements in a team because disagreements is where creative ideas come from. You would never want to be in a team where everyone has the exact same opinions.’

Last but not least, if you’re being interviewed for a job position and they question how long you plan on staying with the company, the TikToker said you should explain that you ‘never apply for a full-time permanent role if you see yourself leaving.’
