‘[We] sentence him to eight months in jail and a fine of IDR14 million (AUD$1,463),’ presiding judge I Gusti Ngurah Putra Atmaja told the court.

Boarta was found guilty of violating Article 30 of Indonesia’s Information and Electronic Transactions Law.

The law prohibits bypassing a digital security system for illegal access to an electronic system, and carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison, Coconuts reported.

The prosecutor previously called for a one year prison sentence, but Boarta got off a lot lighter.

Boarta had a number of extenuating circumstances that were taken into consideration, including his goof behaviour during trial and a promise not to re-offend.
