Ryanair strikes to hit 30,000 passengers as budget airline tells stranded customers it won’t pay for more costly flights

  • Nearly 200 flights have been cancelled on Friday due to a walkout across Europe
  • Protests over working conditions in Spain, Belgium and Portugal part of reason
  • Flights in Holland, Italy and Germany also part of the 190 flights affected
  • Customers across Europe sent text messages or emails about cancellations

The travel plans of 30,000 Ryanair passengers have been thrown into dis-array by another wave of strike action.

The budget airline said almost 200 flights have been cancelled on Friday due to a walkout by cabin crew across Europe.

Protests over working conditions in Spain, Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Italy and Germany will ground 190 flights – or 8 per cent of 2,400 flights scheduled.

Customers across Europe were sent text messages or emails yesterday to tell them. They have been offered an alternative Ryanair flight or a refund.

The airline said passengers will not be entitled to compensation if they are left out of pocket or forced to book a more costly flight with another airline due to the ‘extraordinary circumstances’.

It said staff from rival airlines whipped up the strikes which were ‘beyond Ryanair’s control’.
