A boy who spent six hours at sea with two men after their boat is believed to have capsized off the Queensland coast is in a critical condition.

Water police raced to sea to find the trio after receiving a distress call from the 5.2 metre vessel in the early hours of Sunday morning.

They were about 14km off the coast of Caloundra, in the southeast of Queensland, when something allegedly went wrong.

Police told ABC News they received an initial distress call from those aboard the boat about 2am, which stated the vessel was sinking.

A second call for help, which sent out a short time later, stated the people who had previously been on the boat were now in the water.

The child was airlifted to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, while the two men were brought back to land by marine rescue.

It is understood the men have hypothermia and are being assessed by paramedics.

More to come.
