Snake fell in Western Australian classroom ceiling

  • 30cm snake that was potentially venomous fell on to a classroom of students
  • A student’s arm was brushed by the snake which entered through a ceiling crack
  • Hot weather led to growth in snakes sighted around the school, principal said

Primary school students were left in shock after a snake fell through a cracked ceiling in a Western Australian classroom and brushed the arm of one student.

The classroom of primary school students at Waggrakine Primary School in Geraldton, Western Australia’s Mid West, were immediately evacuated.

A staff member who is also a trained snake handler removed the snake from the evacuated classroom, Perth now reports.

The school’s principal Elisabeth Turner told Perth now that hot weather was the reason for the growth in baby snakes sighted around the school.

‘From time to time when the weather is hot, baby snakes may be seen as there is bushland nearby, however we have a policy in place to ensure students and staff know how to act if they ever see a snake on school grounds,’ Ms Turner said.

She also said the student brushed by the snake was not hurt.

The type of snake is not known but it was 30cm long and possibly venomous.
