South Korean president could join Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un in a three-way summit

  • Moon Jae-in could attend planned June 12 meeting, Seoul officials revealed
  • His participation depended on pre-summit talks between Trump and Kim
  • Talks would likely discuss security guarantee for North Korea, Seoul official said
  • In exchange, North Korea would dump its nuclear weapons program for good

South Korean President Moon Jae-in could join Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un in a three-way summit aimed at denuclearising North Korea.

Preparations for the June 12 meeting between the U.S. and the rogue state are underway with top American diplomat Sung Kim crossing the DMZ on Sunday.

The agenda for the Singapore talks was still being drawn up but would include getting Mr Kim’s regime to permanently shut down his nuclear weapons program.

Adding South Korea to the mix would mean discussions around providing a security guarantee for the North in exchange, according to Yonhap News Agency.

A Seoul official said Mr Moon’s participation depended on pre-summit negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea.

‘The discussions are just getting started, so we are still waiting to see how they come out, but depending on their outcome, the president could join President Trump and Chairman Kim in Singapore,’ they said.

The U.S. President blamed ‘hostility’ shown by a North Korean official who threatened nuclear war for negotiations breaking down.

North Korean vice foreign minister Choe Son Hui also called his deputy Mike Pence a ‘political dummy’ for making ‘ignorant and stupid’ remarks.

‘Based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,’ he said.

His rage subsided after North Korea apologised on Friday and the summit was quickly put back on the table.

Mr Kim also made a show of dramatically demolishing a nuclear test site as a show of good faith and his willingness to abandon weapons development.
