Steve Albini dead at 61: Iconic music producer who worked with Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey and more passes away from a heart attack

Steve Albini, the iconic alternative music pioneer who produced Nirvana’s In Utero album, has died at 61.

The Italian-American musician and record producer died from a heart attack, his staff at his recording studio, Electric Audio, confirmed.

Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana famously hired Albini to produce their third album In Utero in 1993, the last studio album from the band before Cobain shot himself.

Albini founded Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago, and is said to have worked on thousands of albums in various capacities from audio engineering to producing.

In his storied career, Albini worked with musicians including Pixies, Bush, Melt Banana, the Breeders, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker and PJ Harvey.

He also worked with former Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.

In addition to his production work, Abini also played in various bands, most notably Big Black and Shellac.
