Stormzy admits he was ‘a boy’ during relationship with Maya Jama as he talks taking accountability

Stormzy has opened up on how his 2020 split from girlfriend of three years Maya Jama inspired a wave of self-growth and realisation.

The rapper, 29, admitted that the split ‘showed me that I was a boy’, as he talked taking accountability in the two years since their break-up – which ended amid allegations that the musician had been unfaithful.

And his candid words comes after the former couple were spotted getting close just last week as they shared a hug while attending Kendrick Lamar’s concert at London’s O2 Arena.

‘It showed me that I was a boy, not a man’: Stormzy has detailed his emotional split from ex-girlfriend Maya Jama as he talks taking accountability in a new interview with GQ

Taking to the front cover of British GQ as their fifth Man Of The Year, Stormzy spoke on his the impact that his and Maya’s break-up had on him

Sharing that he has done a lot of growing up over the last few years, he put it down to the split while telling the publication: ‘I think my break up with Maya was still really heavy on my heart. I’d never experienced a breakup and the feelings that come with a breakup.

‘And I never wanted to ever be in a position again where I felt what I was feeling. Because it showed me that I was a boy. And I do not want to go any further as a boy. I’ve seen how that manifests in other people. And I don’t want to be like that.’

Continuing on the changes he made, Stormzy admitted that he has now taken accountability for ‘disrespecting’ his former partner.

He explained: ‘What is the necessary work I have to do to make sure I’m not in this position again?

That means growth, accountability, changing my character, changing my routines, my habits, my tradition, my values, my morals. Because how I feel right now and how I’ve made someone else feel and how I’ve devastated a world that I was living in – I just never want to be in this position again. So what do I need to do?’

Looking to the future, Stormzy details his transition from a boy to a man – revealing his hope to marry and have children.

‘My version of success now requires a man: not just more music and more money. Now it means taking care of my family, having children, having a wife, even understanding marriage and raising kids, and that requires a man,’ he shared.

Maya became single again this year after splitting from her NBA player fiancé Ben Simmons – after a whirlwind year-long relationship.

And just last week, she was spotted giving ex Stormzy a hug as they ran into one another at Kendrick Lamar’s concert.

It’s unclear whether the former couple had organised to meet, however after sharing an embrace, they went on to spend the rest of the evening together before going their separate ways.

Onlookers told how the pair later stood next to each other in the VIP area, enjoying each other’s company as they watched the US superstar.
