Strange trend that sees people tanning their butts and genital area goes viral on TikTok

A new TikTok trend that sees users tanning their butts and genital area has gone viral – and while it has left some people scratching their heads, advocates have claimed that the strange act has provided them with extreme benefits.

Perineum sunning is the video streaming app’s latest new fad, and it has convinced millions of users to give their private areas some vitamin D.

The trend has people pointing their bare butts to the sky and tanning their perineum, which is the area between the pubic bone and the anal cavity.

Some TikTokers have even hailed sunning their privates for at least three minutes a day as a miracle, claiming it helps give them ‘better sleep, more energy, and a higher libido.’

The hashtag #perineumsunning has amassed over 2.8 millions views, with other users comparing the sun session to ‘having a cup of coffee’ and ‘recharging.’

TikToker Abushady, whose a regular at perineum sunning, told Vice: ‘It’s a feeling you can’t really describe unless you experience it. ‘

Other users took to the video-sharing platform to defend the practice and dish on all the benefits.

A post by TikToker Sasha Piton read: ‘Better sleep, balanced hormones, more energy, higher libido, increased creativity, sweet freedom, [and] a nice tan [butt].’

And while influencers swear by the below-the-belt bronzing, many medical professionals aren’t as convinced.

Doctors have actually been warning against the trend since it first made its way around the web in 2019, explaining that the skin of the perineum is too sensitive for UV exposure.

In reference to removing cancerous layers of skin, New Jersey dermatologist Zain Husain questioned: ‘Do you really want me doing Mohs surgery on your genitals?’

Dr. Karan Raj also gave his own warning about the viral trend in a clip, stating: ‘Please don’t harvest solar energy with your butthole.

‘The perineum is an area of thin tissue between your back passage and your genitals.

‘The reason it’s called the area where your ”sun don’t shine” is because biology and evolution made sure that it was hidden away.

‘The rays from the sun can increase the risk of burning, irritation and skin cancers.’

Similarly to perineum sunning, many men have been opting for another unusual trend, known as ‘testicle tanning.’

The trend gained popularity when Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggested men undergo ‘testicle tanning’ to feel more manly in his documentary.

Although Tucker coined it as ‘testicle tanning’, the process he was referring to was known as red light therapy – which is not about making your body tan, but rather, ‘improving the skin’s appearance’ and ‘reducing wrinkles, scars, redness, and acne.’

And while the news host left most of the internet bewildered, some men came to Tucker’s defense and praised tanning your private parts – claiming it was as a way to help boost ‘sexual desire,’ ‘erection quality,’ and improve performance in the bedroom.

Bare all! What is perineum sunning:

  • Perineum sunning is TikTok’s latest trend and it has people baring all as they tan their butt and genital areas to reap the health benefits.
  • The assumingly beneficial wellness trend has people pointing their bare butts to the sky and tanning their perineum, which is the area between the pubic bone and the anal cavity.
  • TikTokers have hailed sunning their privates for at least three minutes a day as a miracle, claiming it helps give you ‘better sleep, more energy, and a higher libido.’
  • However, medical professionals advise against it as the skin is ‘too thin’ for exposure to the sun.

DailyMail.com spoke to five men who’ve tried red light therapy on their private parts themselves, with almost all insisting it has worked wonders for their sex lives.

Jay Wiles, 34, a licensed clinical psychologist from Greenville, South Carolina, said he first became interested in red light therapy after hearing about its many benefits.

‘Initially, it was of interest to me because I had heard about it from a mental health standpoint,’ he explained to DailyMail.com. ‘For me, I was most intrigued about how I could utilize it with my patients.

‘I’m all about – how can I optimize health and well being? [I’m interested in] anything that can make it the best it possibly can be.

‘It was just for mood improvement, my testosterone levels were really great, libido was really great. I never had any problems in that area.’

Although Jay was ‘certainly skeptical’ at first, he became ‘sold on the idea’ as soon as he started trying it out.

He first started using red light therapy in 2016, and has been doing it every day since.

‘I was feeling more energetic, more vitalized, my mood was better, I felt better mentally [clearer],’ he told DailyMail.com

Jay said he now does it for 20 minutes each day – and he doesn’t only focus on his private parts; he places a red light on his entire front side for 10 minutes and his entire backside for 10 minutes.

Ben Greenfeld, 40, an author from Spokane, Washington, said he became interested in red light therapy back in 2016, after he heard about it online.

He also said he feels like he has more ‘sexual energy’ since he started using red light therapy.

What is ‘testicle tanning’?

  • ‘Testicle tanning’ refers to red light therapy – which is not about making your body tan, but rather, ‘improving the skin’s appearance’ and ‘reducing wrinkles, scars, redness, and acne’
  • There is a lot of ongoing research, publication of small studies, and much discussion on the internet about the effectiveness of red light therapy for all types of health uses
  • Red light therapy is said to stimulate the mitochondria in your cells – which creates energy for the body
  • With more energy, other cells can do their work more efficiently, such as repairing skin, boosting new cell growth and enhancing skin rejuvenation
  • Red light therapy uses very low levels of heat and doesn’t hurt or burn the skin. It’s not the same type of light used in tanning booths, and it doesn’t expose your skin to damaging UV rays
  • Although research is still ongoing, some studies have suggested that it could also help with dementia, dental pain, hair loss, and testosterone levels
  • When energy is being synthesized and distributed more efficiently at the cellular level, it allows the various systems in the body to function more efficiently as well. This includes the hormone-producing endocrine system

‘My sexual desire, my libido, even my erection quality – all of that went up. It’s definitely doing something in that department,’ he shared.

Joshua Settlage, 25 – a certified strength and conditioning specialist from California, and the CEO of Settlage Strength LLC – learned about the potential benefits of red light therapy through work.

He was specifically interested in it’s ‘ability to help improve recovery following training’ – and ‘decided to give it a shot.’

He started doing red light therapy in the fall of 2019. He now uses it three to four times a week for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes at night.

He hasn’t measured his testosterone levels, but told us that he believes red light therapy has improved his sex life.

He added: ‘[It also] improved recovery from training sessions, faster healing of injuries, and improved sleep.’

Personal trainer Colton Marshall, 22, from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, first heard about red light therapy while he was listening to a podcast, and became ‘interested in the potential health and hormonal benefits.’

He hasn’t personally measured his testosterone levels, but said he can tell that it’s ‘improved greatly.’

‘I can tell naturally that it has improved greatly – libido is up, I have more energy during the day, my mood is way better all the time, I’m hungrier and my skin is a lot more clear,’ he revealed.

Josh Lekach, 35, who lives in Costa Rica and runs his own podcast, doesn’t participate in red light therapy – instead, he goes out in the sun naked for about 10 minutes every day.

Josh started sunbathing in the nude after he moved from California to Costa Rica last September, and he said it made him feel ‘massively different.’

‘I feel like I’m 15, I feel like a young man,’ he said, adding that it ‘absolutely’ boosted his sex life.
