Surgeon, 53, is accused of drunkenly beating his dentist ex-girlfriend, 40, in brutal attacks

A surgeon has been accused of beating his dentist ex-girlfriend in more than a dozen brutal attacks that caused her to suffer a miscarriage, broken bones and concussion.

Dr Joseph Finley, 53, an ears, nose and throat surgeon affiliated with Northwell Health in New York City, allegedly launched a series of violent attacks on his now ex-girlfriend, Negar Dolatabadi, over a period of two years.

Finley would drink excessively – at one point drinking on average 1.75 liters of bourbon per day – before violently assaulting Ms Dolatabadi, 40, on seven different occasions, according to court documents filed in the New York County Supreme Court on Friday.

Ms Dolatabadi, originally from Iran, was allegedly hit, thrown to the floor and punched so hard over the two years that she was left with serious injuries including a broken toes, broken ribs and concussion.

During these violent assaults, Finley would scream ‘whore’ at Ms Dolatabadi, according to the court documents seen by DailyMail.com. Finley, who is now facing criminal charges, including strangulation and assault, has ‘vigorously’ denied the allegations.

A month after finding out Ms Dolatabadi was pregnant with their first child, Finley allegedly attacked her at their home, kicking her in the stomach and throwing her across the room.

Shortly after this attack, Ms Dolatabadi learned that she had miscarried and lost the baby, according to Manhattan prosecutors.

‘He’s ruined my life and he shouldn’t get away with it,’ Ms Dolatabadi told The New York Post. ‘I have a lifetime injury. I’m in pain every night. There is not a single second when I’m not aware of the pain in my foot.’

Finley was arrested on September 25, 2022 and charged with one count of second-degree strangulation, six counts of third-degree assault and two counts of third-degree criminal mischief.

The couple began dating in March 2018 and in August that same year they moved in together.

But within three months of them living in New York, Finley violently assaulted Ms Dolatabadi while repeatedly calling her a ‘whore’, accusing her of cheating on him and threatening to call her employer to ‘let them know she is a whore’, the lawsuit claims.

This first assault left Ms Dolatabadi with broken ribs, nerve damage to her left hand as well as bruises across her body, according to the court documents.

Finley promised he would stop drinking – and this worked until July 2020. Finley started drinking excessively – which led to violent outbursts – during the Covid pandemic lockdown.

On July 5, 2020, Finley launched an attack on Ms Dolatabadi while threatening: ‘I will kill you. I have people in high places,’ according to the lawsuit. Ms Dolatabadi was allegedly left bleeding and concussed on the bathroom floor.

On the same day, Finley slapped Ms Dolatabadi across the side of her head, landing a blow directly to her ear – causing the alleged victim to suffer from excruciating pain and nausea.

She remained on the bathroom for two days throwing up and with oozing liquid coming from her ear, the lawsuit claims.

After this incident, Finley began drinking more and more alcohol – and was drinking on average 1.75 litres of bourbon per day, Ms Dolatabadi claims in her lawsuit.

In October 2020, Finley slammed a door on Ms Dolatabadi’s foot while repeatedly screaming at her that she was a ‘whore’ in an attack that left the dentist with a broken big toe.

In another attack a year later, on October 4, 2021, Finley pushed Ms Dolatabadi so hard that her right foot hit the TV stand, causing her to suffer a broken ring toe on her right foot.

‘Moments before breaking Ms Dolatabadi’s toe, Finley shouted the words to the effect of ‘I’ll get you kicked out of the country, I’ll tell the FBI who you really are’ and ‘I’ll make sure you will never look the same again’,’ the court document claims.

A week later, Finley allegedly tried to strangle Ms Dolatabadi while shouting: ‘If you hurt my career I have to kill you. You know that right?’

On December 17, 2021, Finley also pushed Ms Dolatabadi onto the floor so hard that she re-injured her previously broken big toe.

‘Ms Dolatabadi sustained a substantial re-injury to the previously operated on right food causing severe hematoma, swelling, and inability to walk, as can be verified by Ms Dolatabadi’s orthopedic surgeon and medical records,’ the court filing claims.

During this assault, Finley allegedly shouted at Ms Dolatabadi, who is originally from Iran, ‘I’ll send your terrorist ass back to Iran’ and ‘I’ll make sure you never see your mother again’ and ‘I’ll disfigure you!’

Finley would often leave the apartment after the assaults for fear that the neighbours would call the police after hearing MsDolatabadi’s screams, the court documents claim.

In February 2022, Ms Dolatabadi found out she was pregnant and told Finley. A month later, Finley allegedly violently attacked his then girlfriend, kicking her in the stomach and throwing her across the room.

Not long after the attack, Ms Dolatabadi learned that she had suffered a miscarriage.

Three months later, in April 2022, the couple were travelling in a car when Finley allegedly reached across and punched Ms Dolatabadi in the face, breaking her sunglasses and cutting her face. He allegedly shouted: ‘You deserve this, what kind of kid wants you for a mother?’

On May 19, 2022, following yet another alleged attack, Ms Dolatabadi left Finley and reported him to police.

In September, he was arrested and charged with domestic violence offences.

Dolatabadi’s lawyer Kenneth Belkin told The Post the dentist couldn’t work for two years because of her foot injury.

‘You can’t do a [hospital] rotation as a dentist if you have broken toes,’ Belkin said.

‘She is an immigrant to this country from Iran and worked very hard to become a dentist and it was not easy,’ Belkin said. ‘She has essentially been robbed of this by this man’s action.’
