Teen is killed and five others are injured after two boats collided on a  Missouri river

A 16-year-old girl was killed and five other people were injured when two boats collided in southeast Missouri over the weekend.

Cali Murphy, of Poplar Bluff, was killed in the Sunday night crash. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the accident happened when a boater veered into the path of another vessel on the Black River about eight miles north of Poplar Bluff.

Authorities told KFVS that they recommended charging Braden Bollinger, 27, with three counts of boating while intoxicated resulting in the death of another, resulting in serious physical injury and resulting in physical injury.

Bollinger and Brady Smyth, 50, Kirk Murphy, 35, and Shannon Sisson, 32, were all seriously injured.

Three of the victims were flown from the scene and the others were transported in ambulances.

Authorities said they recommended charging Braden Bollinger, 27, with three counts of boating while intoxicated. Bollinger and Brady Smyth, 50, were in one boat. Kirk Murphy (right), 35, Shannon Sisson (left), 32, were in the second boat. They were seriously injured

Police said the first boat, a 2003 Alweld, was traveling downstream and was being driven by Bollinger with Smyth onboard.  

Bollinger’s boat reportedly veered into the path of the other boat, a 1987 Shoalrunner, that was driven upstream by Rushin. 

Cali, Kirk Murphy and Sisson were in the boat with Rushin.

Bollinger’s boat hit Rushin’s vessel head on and the occupants of both boats were ejected.

Cali attended Poplar Bluff High School where she had just finished up her sophomore year.
