A 17-year-old boy will spend at least 17 years behind bars after stabbing another teenager to death because he wasn’t allowed into a Halloween party.

Michael Thompson, from Huddersfield, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering 17-year-old Jamie Brown, from Halifax, after he stabbed him in the stomach and damaged major blood vessels.

Thompson had been trying to break into the party in Ovenden with a group of youths who were carrying knives and hammers when he got into an argument with Mr Brown and his friends.

West Yorkshire police said the shocking attack ‘highlights the devastation of using knives’.

Thompson was found guilty of murder at Leeds Crown Court, following a four-week trial, as well as possessing an offensive weapon, violent disorder and involvement in stabbing a second male, police confirmed.

Moments after the bloody attack on October 27 last year a second 17-year-old boy was stabbed as the streets, shops and takeaways erupted into violence.

Officers also confirmed that a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent in relation to the second stabbing and was jailed for three years.

A 17-year-old who pleaded guilty to violent disorder was jailed for 12 months.

A 15-year-old and 17-year-old who were found guilty of violent disorder were given 12-month referral orders.

Last month a court heard how Thompson had researched stabbing videos online days before the killing.

Detective Inspector Andy Cass said: ‘The tragic death of Jamie has had a lasting effect, not just on his family and friends but also on the wider community.

‘He should have celebrated his 18th birthday last month but, instead, his family are trying to come to terms with his death.

‘I would like to praise their bravery and composure throughout the criminal proceedings and I hope today’s sentencing can bring them some degree of comfort.’

‘Jamie’s killer went out that night with the intention of inflicting injury and worse, and did not hesitate to pull out a knife.

‘He then tried to dispose of it by throwing it down a drain.

‘This case highlights the devastation of using knives. Carrying a knife is never the answer.

‘The decision of those convicted to carry a knife resulted in two young men being stabbed and one of those young men losing his life.’
