In comments published by The Mirror, the actress spoke candidly about the challenges involved in playing such a beloved royal figure.

‘I think it’s a unique challenge as an actor, to portray those last days,’ the star said, referring to Princess Diana in 1997.

Elizabeth went on to say that Peter’s interpretation made ’emotional sense’ to her, using it to guide her acting style.

‘It’s his interpretation and it made emotional sense to me, so I clung to that. Because obviously it’s devastating, and it’s fraught and we can never know,’ she added.

The final season of the Netflix hit explores Diana’s final days and her relationship with Dodi Al Fayed.

Diana and Dodi are seen on his super-yacht in the Saint Tropez in July, 1997, just months before her tragic death in the Alma tunnel in Paris.

It also explores Tony Blair’s election, Charles and Camilla’s marriage and the early days of Kate and William dating, which gained a loyal audience around the globe.
