Hope and Iris Bennett led a daring but costly escape out of the Civic Republic Military complex on Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond on AMC.
The season two episode titled Death And The Dead started with CRM officers opening fire on what they thought were the group of escaped scientists making their way through the tunnels of the complex. The group turned out to be zombies dressed in medical coats and unbeknownst to the soldiers some had explosives tied to their backs.
Across the complex, still in a secure room, Dr. Leo Bennett [Joe Holt] saw what happened to the zombies.

‘They are sending us a signal so we are going to send one back. They brought us to this,’ Leo announced to his family and the scientists.
Leo pushed a button to detonate one of the zombie’s explosive devices. He handed out detonator devices to Hope, Iris, Felix and the others in the room and they each pushed a button to ignite explosives planted on zombies throughout the CRM complex.
‘There is no going back now,’ said Felix Carlucci [Nico Tortorella] as explosions erupted everywhere.
Warrant Officer Jadis Stokes [Pollyanna McIntosh] was with Staff Sergeant Jennifer ‘Huck’ Mallick [Annet Mahendru] in the CRM commander’s office when the explosions started occurring. Jadis wondered where they got explosives.
Tough loss: Iris was gutted when she learned that her love interest Percy was killed
‘They are scientist, Jadis,’ Huck reminded her.
Leo’s voice then spoke over Jadis’ walkie-talkie. Jadis told Leo that he killed soldiers who had dedicated their lives to the CRM. Leo said that the explosions were just for show and that he was prepared to escalate.
‘You should know you crossed a very serious line,’ Jadis said.
Standing up: Leo said that the explosions were just for show and that he was prepared to escalate
‘You destroyed our home and an entire city of living persons and you tried to hide that from us,’ said Leo. ‘We are done with the CRM. We are leaving, all of us, today.’
‘You think you are in a position to bargain with me?,’ Jadis asked.
Leo said he did and then revealed to her that they had kidnapped General Major Beale’s son Mason [Will Meyer]. She didn’t believe him until Leo let Mason speak to her and he begged Jadis to help him.
Leo told Jadis that in exchange for Mason’s freedom that he wanted two fully loaded transport trucks. Jadis asked if Leo was really ready to abandon his role in finding a cure. Leo told her that the CRM were murderers and that he would find another way to save everyone eventually. Leo gave her 30 minutes to get the trucks to the service entrance.
Good question: Jadis asked if Leo was really ready to abandon his role in finding a cure
Jadis told him that he would get his trucks but that he was on a suicide mission. Jadis told Leo that the only thing outside the CRM’s walls was death.
Once the call ended, Jadis turned and blamed Huck for not keeping Leo’s daughter Hope [Alexa Mansour] in line. Huck told her that the Bennetts and the others were upset that the CRM destroyed their home and that it was not her fault that the CRM ‘couldn’t keep a lid on that.’
Back at the culling facility, Silas Plaskett [Hal Cumpston] was administering aid to Dennis [Max Osinski] after he suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach. Silas told him that he didn’t deserve to get shot trying to help him.

Dennis apologized to Silas for what Huck did to him. Elton Ortiz [Nicolas Cantu] ran in with a medical kit. He told them that he couldn’t find antibiotics, but instead gave Dennis alcohol, which he drank and poured on his wounds. Dennis instructed Elton to reach in with a scissor and pull the bullet out while Silas held him down.
‘Nice work, kid,’ said Dennis when Elton managed to find the bullet and remove it.
Elton and Silas bandaged Dennis up. He then instructed them to leave him and to stick to the plan and find their friends.

At the CRM, the transport trucks Jadis promised were delivered and Felix went outside to check them out.
While they waited for Felix to return, Mason looked at the tied up zombies in the laboratory and wondered what experiments actually had been conducted by the CRM.
Leo headed outside with scientists to the trucks while Hope and Iris stayed behind with bags of explosives.
The plan: Elton and Silas stuck to the plan to find their friends
‘All eyes will be on you for this part,’ Felix told Leo.
Mason called out to Hope and said that maybe the CRM was actually their last chance for a future and that she might be ruining it. Iris [Aliyah Royale] told Hope to ignore him because he didn’t know what the CRM had really done. Hope just stared at Mason and then walked off.
Silas and Elton left Dennis and drove off in a jeep. As they sped away, Elton dropped firecrackers from the window to attract walkers from the woods.
In the lab, Percy [Ted Sutherland] asked Iris how she was doing. Iris said she was okay and was just thinking about what would come next. Percy told her about the things that he wanted the two of them to do together when this was all over. He said he always wanted to take her to the Getty Museum and Iris smiled at him.

Meanwhile, Hope went with Felix to set explosives charges inside the lab that contained the yellow gas that would be used to eliminate Portland. When they entered the lab, Hope noticed that the lab was warm and Felix realized that the zombies inside had thawed out. He stuck a knife in one of the walkers heads but it didn’t die because it’s head was still frozen.
Hope tried to kill another zombie that was coming who she realized was actually Dr. Lyla Belshaw [Natalie Gold]. Hope kept smashing the door into Lyla’s head repeatedly until her head finally burst. Felix asked Hope if she was okay and she said, ‘Yeah, let’s plant the charges and get out of here.’
When they opened up the warehouse door where the gas had been kept, they saw that it was completely empty. Felix said they must have moved the gas and knew that they were coming.

In the commander’s office, Jadis was informed that there was a mass of walkers headed towards the CRM. Jadis told Huck that while they saw the two transport trucks leave, she didn’t think that all of Bennett’s crew had actually left.
‘If they found the vial, they found the gas and they wouldn’t leave without trying to destroy it,’ said Jadis. ‘But they won’t. They won’t get out of here alive.’
‘We are minutes away from a full breach,’ said a CRM officer who walked in to give Jadis information on the army of walkers headed their way.
Jadis ordered the CRM to attempt to divert the walkers with explosives and to send all available teams to the western gate. She said if they didn’t hold the line that they would lose everything.

Hope told Iris about the gas being gone. Iris insisted that the gas still had to be on CRM premises. Felix said there was no time to go look. He told them they had to stick to their exit plan, which included dropping Mason off outside and then radioing the CRM where to pick him up.
‘And Portland,’ said Iris. ‘We are just giving up on a whole city.’
‘We can’t save anyone until we save ourselves,’ Felix said.
Iris then confronted Mason and demanded to know where the gas had been hidden. Mason told them that he didn’t believe his father would do any of the things that they had accused him of, especially without a reason.

‘He’s a lot more sane than any of you a**holes,’ said Mason. ‘ I don’t know s*** about any gas.’
Percy grabbed Iris and told her to stop yelling at Mason and that they would figure it out. Felix told them they needed to leave.
Back in the commander’s office, Jadis looked out her window at the mass of zombies approaching. Huck offered to go suit up and help defend the base but Jadis ordered her to stay put.
Powerful father: ‘He’s a lot more sane than any of you a**holes,’ said Mason. ‘ I don’t know s*** about any gas’
‘Why?’ asked Huck.
‘There is business here left to resolve,’ Jadis said.
By then Elton and Silas reached the back entrance of the CRM complex. Elton told Silas that he believed it would work out best if they separated. Silas started walking through the halls alone but then immediately ran into a familiar face, Webb [Jesse Gallegos] who pulled his gun on him. Silas put his hands up and placed his weapon on the floor.
Zombies zone: The survivors had to deal with the CRM and zombies in the area
Silas asked him what was going on. Webb told him he had orders to shoot any insurgents on sight. Silas tried to convince him that he wasn’t an insurgent and was at the CRM looking for medical supplies for Dennis.
Webb told him he didn’t believe him and had to kill him. Elton appeared just in time and knocked Webb unconscious from behind.
Elton and Silas then found the lab with all the medical supplies. Elton loaded up his bag. Webb knocked on the door and demanded to be let in. They refused and within moments Webb was mauled to death by zombies. Elton and Silas realized that it would be difficult to escape since they were also surrounded by zombies. Elton said he knew a way out. He had them both climb inside the giant metal globe sculpture that Indira built. They rolled inside, like a hamster wheel, down the hill killing all the zombies that stood in their path.
Once they got to the bottom of the hill they opened the top of the earth sculpture and ran off.
Meanwhile, Hope, Iris, Percy, Felix and Mason, with their hands tied, made their way through the stairs of the CRM. Once they set foot on the outside, they were immediately surrounded by Jadis and her soldiers. Felix and Percy trained their guns on Mason while Jadis and her soldiers aimed their guns on them.
Jadis tried to negotiate with them and told them to hand Mason over. Iris screamed at her that the CRM covered up a genocide.
Strong negotiator: Jadis tried to negotiate with them and told them to hand Mason over
‘You murdered a hundred-thousand people,’ said Iris.
‘They were going to die anyway,’ responded Jadis. ‘The military made the hard choices so the civilians wouldn’t have to.’
Jadis said that two years ago the CRM determined that the alliance would become a drain on their resources. She said at best the people would have died of famine but at worst that they could have spread disease and destroyed all of humanity. She said they ended it quickly in the name of mercy. She said they took out the children and most intelligent individuals to help build a new society.
‘What gives you the right to determine who lives and who dies?’ asked Hope.
While they argued in the open, Huck turned around and saw the sharpshooters were putting themselves into positions around them.
‘The CRM makes the hard choices so you don’t have to,’ said Jadis.
Jadis told them that all they were doing was stopping scientific progress by helping the scientists escape.
‘Why?’ asked Jadis. ‘Because you are mad at us. It could be cute, if it wasn’t so pathetic.’
Zombies came up behind Felix so he turned his gun to shoot them. Mason used the opportunity to headbutt Iris and make his escape. He ran to Jadis and she called out ‘one shot kill’ that authorized the CRM to start shooting.
Iris and the others ran off. Huck quickly killed two CRM soldiers and then pointed her gun at Jadis and told her to drop her weapon.

‘Wrong choice, Jennifer,’ Jadis said.
When the shooting stopped, Iris ran over and saw that Percy had been hit and killed. Hope threatened to kill Mason. She pointed her gun at him, but Iris cried and yelled at Hope ‘don’t!’ Hope told Mason that he was just like them. Iris and Hope stared at Mason but eventually Hope threw down her weapon. Felix pulled up on a truck and they got in and left Mason where he was.
Huck watched them leave and continued to hold Jadis at gunpoint.
‘I guess your mother was right about you,’ said Jadis.
‘My mother has nothing to do with it,’ said Huck.
When Mason was surrounded by zombies, Jadis ran to help. Huck decided to leave and got into a jeep and drove off.
One the dust settled, Jadis radioed the Major General and thanked him for the additional troops to secure the facility. She urged him though to move up the timeline on Portland. She told him that the Bennetts knew about Portland and that she planned to retrieve scientists who escaped.
‘I will fix it,’ Jadis said to the General.
After they escaped, Felix, Hope and Iris pulled up in their jeep to a field. Hope wondered why her father wasn’t there at the meeting spot. Felix called him over the walkie-talkie and Leo told him he was near but that his truck had a blown tire. He told him there were spikes left in the road and Felix circled back to help him.

Huck drove to see Dennis. When she arrived, he was on the couch of a warehouse injured but still alive. She kissed him and stared into his eyes. She asked him what happened and he said he got a little too friendly with a bullet.
Elton and Silas arrived at the rendezvous spot to meet up with the others. Hope hugged Elton and cried. He told them that he got the meds for Dennis. Silas then asked about Percy and Iris just started crying. Hope told them that even if they made it, the gas was probably already on its way to Portland.
‘The CRM won,’ Hope said.
Iris broke down crying just as Huck was also crying outside clutching a military issued dog tag. Huck then radioed them and said she thought she found something. She asked them if they still had the C-4 plastic explosives while standing outside in a field lined with black shipping containers filled with gas canisters.
The Walking Dead: The World Beyond will return next Sunday on AMC.
