Part of the new generation of massage gun, the Theragun mini 2nd generation promises to give your tired, sore body a new lease of life. All in a very practical and portable size.

A must for gym bunnies, runners or desk workers, the percussive therapy device pummels the muscles (everywhere from your hamstrings to shoulders, chest and feet) to encourage bloody flow, aiding recovery, relieving pain and increasing mobility.

How we tested

Therabody recommends using the Theragun mini 2nd generation both pre and post-workout. We put the device to the test both before a HIIT session, a 5k run and used the handheld mini massage gun as part of our post-workout recovery as well as after a long stint working from home.

The Theragun mini is a powerful and portable device that’s proven to relieve aches and pains and improve recovery.

The patented ergonomic triangle design is now 20 per cent smaller and 30 per cent lighter than the original Theragun mini – ideal for a quick treatment on the go.

It also comes with Bluetooth connectivity and three attachments.

Design

If you’ve ever eyed up a massage gun only to be intimidated by the size and heft, then the Theragun mini 2 generation by Therabody is the perfect entry level-device.

The smallest, lightest Theragun yet, it’s 20 per cent smaller and 30 per cent lighter than the original Theragun mini. The ergonomic triangle shape is completely non-threatening and thoughtfully designed to be practical and portable for relief on the go.

Weighing only 1lbs, you could easily carry this in your gym bag to help with a post-workout recovery or even to the office. It’s smarter, too, with Bluetooth connectivity, which helps you connect to the Therabody app to follow custom, guided wellness routines.

Features

Despite being small and lightweight and marketed as the perfect travel companion for quality massage on the go, the Theragun mini 2nd generation is loaded with features to help you achieve an effective and personalised massage.

The device is Bluetooth enabled, so you can access a whole library of step-by-step routines to show you how to get the most out of the mini, including active recovery, routines for specific ailments like plantar fasciitis and workout warm ups.

It has three speeds (1750, 2100, 2400 PPMs) with LED speed indicator, which can be controlled on the app and on the device, while the brushless motor delivers renowned Theragun power while being quieter than ever.

It has 120 minutes of battery life and can be used with the Theragun app for tailored, guided sessions, including daily self-care, activity warm ups and cool downs

Performance

Small, light and easy to hold thanks to the ergonomic triangle design, the Theragun mini 2nd generation is very easy to manoeuvre and lift above your head, targeting those hard-to-reach areas like your back and triceps.

Those who haven’t used a massage gun before will appreciate the app’s guided sessions. There are hundreds to choose from, and they take just a few minutes to complete, so even if you have just five minutes before a run, you can reap the rewards.

We particularly liked the Run Warm-Up, which activates muscles and reduces post-running soreness in one. For a more soothing practice, the Bedtime Ritual was also a hit, and really did release tension ahead of a great night’s sleep.

While ideal for a quick fix and to relieve tension after a long day hunched at the desk, serious athletes might find the pressure and speed lacking. For a more intense massage, the Theragun Pro might be a better alternative, but it comes with a hefty £469 price tag.

Mail Best Verdict

Small and lightweight, this is a stylish and easy-to-use massage gun that’s a brilliant option for those looking for an entry-level option or for those looking for pain relief on the go.

The Theragun mini 2nd generation glides effortlessly across the body, even on those hard-to-reach areas and demonstrates impressive power even on the slowest setting. You can apply as much pressure as you need to tailor it to your needs.

While perfectly suited to everyday aches and pains, serious athletes might prefer the performance of a more professionally high-tech device or a full-sized model.

It also gets bonus points for the easy-to-use app that allowed us to confidently use the device and get the most out of it. The run time of 120 minutes also got brownies points.

Pros: Lightweight design, ergonomic grip, portable, Bluetooth app, quiet, ideal for quick massage and relaxation

Cons: Those used to deep-tissue massage might find the power lacking
