A student has died after being hit by a bus in front of his classmates near Newcastle in New South Wales. 

The 15-year-old boy, believed to be in Year 10, was riding a bicycle when he was hit outside the gates of Irrawang High School.

Other students watched as he was dragged under the bus and was fatally injured.

Inspector Matt Hawke told the Newcastle Herald the scene outside the school was ‘incredibly distressing’.

‘It is a tough day for everybody involved,’ he added. 

Police said the boy was hit on Mount Hall Road in Raymond Terrace at about 8.30am and died at the scene.

The road was closed.

The bus has been taken for investigation and its 41-year-old driver will underog mandatory testing.
