Travellers were exposed to deadly South African mutant Covid strain in Sydney

Urgent warning that 40 travellers were exposed to deadly South African mutant Covid strain in infected hotel – and they’ve already travelled interstate

Dozens of travellers who stayed in a Sydney quarantine hotel where three people tested positive to the South Africa Covid strain have already travelled interstate, health officials warned.

NSW Health is urgently tracking travellers who stayed at the busy Mercure hotel in Sydney anytime between April 7 and 12.

The three hotel guests, including two who are related, touched down in Australia on April 3.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said they travelled on the same plane and were seated in the same section of the aircraft.

They stayed in adjacent rooms on the 10th floor while completing their mandatory two-week quarantine.

‘What we are concerned about is there could have been transmission,’ Dr Chant said.

The trio tested positive to the virus on day seven, 10 and 12 of their stay. They were all negative when tested on day two.

More to follow.
