Uniqlo Australia and Japan: Amazing checkout technology wows thousands of shoppers

Shopper is blown away by ‘futuristic’ Uniqlo checkout that transforms how she scans clothes: ‘How is this real and why doesn’t every store have this?’

  • A shopper was impressed by the advanced technology Uniqlo uses in-stores
  • She simply placed her basket of items on the scanner and it calculated her total
  • Uniqlo uses radio frequency identification tags which make this possible
  • The brand is presently trialling the extremely convenient technology worldwide

A shopper has been left shocked after experiencing the ‘futuristic’ technology Uniqlo stores use to scan items.

Yoko, from New York, recently visited a Uniqlo store on her trip to Japan which has ‘automated scanners’ that immediately scan each item in the basket and displayed the total within seconds – all without removing them.

The technology is used in Australia, Japan, the United States, and various parts of Europe.

‘This is the proof that Uniqlo is living in the future,’ the mum said as she documented her experience in a video.

‘All items were scanned within two clicks,’ she marvelled.

Uniqlo uses radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, which easily allow the scanning machine to identify each item and calculate the total amount.

Each clothing item from Uniqlo has a small small RFID tag, which is thinner than 1mm, attached to them.

The brand is slowly rolling out the technology worldwide.

‘I could not believe it – I was pretty sceptical,’ Yoko admitted. ‘I had to go through all the items and make sure they were correctly scanned.’

But she was pleasantly surprised when she found no mistake.

‘No line, no talking, no waiting whatsoever and it was so seamless!’ she added joyfully.

Thousands were similarly in awe of Uniqlo’s technology.

‘This is amazing, I love how easy this makes checking out multiple items,’ one woman said.

‘So convenient! I will be visiting just to test this out,’ added another.

But others were not as impressed.

‘This is terrible. I prefer talking to the check out people and having normal human interaction,’ said one man.

‘I like talking to people and do not use credit cards – this is not for me.’
