Woman’s body found after house fire Christmas at Merimbula

A 61-year-old woman has been found dead inside a burning home after a man was pulled out of the smouldering house alive. 

Emergency services were called to a home at Tura Beach, Merimbula, on NSW’s Far South Coast on about 12.30am on Christmas after a man woke to find smoke filling his bedroom.

When police arrived he revealed there was still a couple inside the home. 

Two officers entered the burning building and found a 67-year-old man on the floor and helped him to safety, but the intensity of the fire prevented them from searching further.

The 61-year-old woman’s body was discovered inside the home before midday on Christmas, after firefighters brought the fire under control.   

A crime scene has been established and specialist fire investigators are en route.

The 67-year-old man is recovering at the South East Regional Hospital.

A woman is fighting for life after a high-speed crash killed three in Point Cook, in Melbourne’s west, on Christmas Eve.

Three people lost their lives just after 7.30pm when one car flipped and another caught fire on Palmers Road on Sunday evening.  

Two victims’ injuries were so horrific that police were unable to identify them.  

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation by the Major Collision Unit.

Detours remain in place at Palmers Rd, with police directing traffic as they investigate the incident and prepare a report for the coroner.

Eight people were injured when two cars collided early on Christmas morning in Melbourne’s east.

The cars crashed at the Stud and Boronia road intersection in Wantirna South with one car rolling over. 

Five occupants had to be cut from the overturned car. 

They were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries while three people from the second car were also taken to hospital.

Australia is 10 days into Operation Safe Arrival – the period from December 15th to 31st where the double-demerit point system is in place and 388 high-visibility patrol vehicles will be out on the roads.  

About 2.30pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to Waterfall Way in Dorrigo, 65km west of Coffs Harbour, after reports a motorcycle had crashed into a rock wall, the Daily Telegraph reported. 

A NSW police spokeswoman said the rider, a 26-year-old man, died at the scene.  

Earlier a 48-year-old man died after his car collided with another vehicle near Lismore in northeastern NSW.

‘We have had [16] people die during Operation Safe Arrival, which means more places will be empty at the family Christmas table tomorrow,’ NSW Police assistant commissioner Michael Corboy said in a statement on Sunday.

‘It is disappointing to see a number of incidents of drink driving. You will be caught, or worse still, end up killing yourself or a loved one.’

It follows the death of a 25-year-old man after the car he was travelling in collided with a taxi van carrying six people near Walcha on Saturday night, police say.

Meanwhile, an eight-year-old tragically died in a quad bike accident on a farm in Jerramungup in Western Australia midday on Saturday.

He was riding the vehicle through the rural property when the accident occurred, prompting his younger brother to run three kilometres to seek assistance.

The boy was tragically unable to be saved once help arrived. 

The child’s death devastated the local community.
