Whitsundays home sold for $10million UNDER asking price

A stunning six-bedroom property in the Whitsundays has finally sold after hitting the market with an asking price of $25 million more than four years ago.

Mandalay House, which comes with a helipad, climate-controlled wine cellar and an infinity pool overlooking the Whitsundays, secretly changed hands under a strict confidentiality agreement for approximately $15 million on Friday.

The 4114 sqm property on Airlie Beach also comes with a marina large enough to house two 21m yachts and a dining room that comfortably seats 12 guests.

Marketing agents from Ray White Whitsundays and Sotheby’s International Realty refused to comment on the hush-hush deal, but the Whitsunday Times has praised the mega-mansion as the most opulent home in the area.

However, Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty CEO Paul Arthur confirmed to realestate.com.au that the buyers would not live in it full time.

The wealthy Sydney buyers have inspected the Airlie Beach property on two occasions, with Mr Arthur labelling the house as ‘one of Australia’s trophy homes’.

The Mandalay House won Mansion Global’s Property of the Year in 2016, and Ray White Whitsunday principal Mark Beale said at the time that the award was a real ‘pat on the back’ for the region.

‘To be compared to houses from all over the world, and Europe in particular, and very old and upmarket homes in certain parts of Europe, really puts the Whitsundays on the map,’ he said.

‘It will draw a lot of attention to the Whitsundays as a whole, but it really does show and reward the owners for the detail and design of such an amazing house.’

‘In the end I think both the sellers and the buyers were extremely happy with the final outcome,’ Mr Arthur said.

‘It is going to be a wonderful summer home for them and their extended family.’

He added that there were not many people who could write a $14 million cheque and not have it as their primary residence.

Property records reveal that property developer Neil Murray built the iconic Mediterranean-inspired resort at the end of Mandalay Road.
