A limited edition red 50 cent coin has been released to mark 90 years of an iconic Australian train journey.
The striking red piece depicts the Afghan Express steam train now known as The Ghan – a 2,979km journey from Adelaide to Darwin.
But only 30,000 of the uncirculated coins will be available for a retail price of $15 each.

‘The Ghan is a national icon and celebrating 90 years of adventure across the country is a significant achievement,’ Royal Australian Mint CEO Ross MacDiarmid said.
The Afghan Express steam train’s first journey known as a ‘luxury tourist experience’ first commenced in 1929.
An extension of the route allows off-train excursions to Coober Pedy and Katherine.
Customers who purchase the piece will be in the running for an exclusive opportunity to win two tickets for a luxury one-way trip on The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin.
‘The striking limited edition coin tells the story one of the world’s great railway journeys,’ Mr MacDiarmid said.
‘The Royal Australian Mint is excited to share yet another new coin with train lovers, coin collectors, fans of The Ghan and the Australian public.’
