NRL star Daly Cherry-Evans has stopped eating a family-sized tub of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream every night as he transforms his body ahead of the upcoming season.

The Manly Sea Eagles captain, 31, said he fought not only against his sweet tooth but also the lure of a boozy night out with his mates to get himself in peak condition for his side’s opening game against the Melbourne Storm next month.

Cherry-Evans said he has also cut back on processed food and potato chips.

‘I would comfortably have ice cream five nights a week after dinner,’ he told The Daily Telegraph. ‘Any colour, any flavour.’

‘I could polish off one of those Ben & Jerry’s takeaway tubs in one sitting. Most people could but I’m supposed to be a professional athlete; they last people a week – I would eat one in a night.’

Cherry-Evans has also cut back on processed food and potato chips to sculpt a new six-pack which has left his teammates in awe

He said the urge to indulge in hot chips and lollies was harder to avoid because of the diet of his three young kids, while cutting back on drinking had been difficult.

‘The best way to explain it is when I drink I have a few. I don’t drink midweek. But if I drink with the boys, I’d have a fair few. Sacrificing that for a while has been hard,’ he said.

Cherry-Evans shied away from showing off his new ripped rig at the event last week.

But he said he was reaping the benefits of an improved diet and committing more to his training regime.

The Sea Eagles skipper is hoping to lead his side to their first NRL title since 2011 following a sixth-placed finish last year.

He signed a $10million lifetime deal with Manly in 2015 and last year played his 200th NRL game.
