An incredible award-wining apartment with a statement spiral staircase, circular swimming pool and lush internal garden lies inside an old converted Weeties factory.

The remodelled factory at North Fremantle, in Perth’s south, is sandwiched between the ocean and the Swan River, half an hour’s drive from the city centre.

Its period red-brick facade with the original painted signage juxtaposes the ultra-modern architecturally-designed home inside.

Three apartments inside the 1930s building were combined to create one spectacular light-filled living space that was designed around the heritage-listed warehouse’s challenging structure.

The open-plan living room houses a lounge space, a long hard-wood table which is used as both an island bench and place to dine, and a stainless steel pullman kitchen that sits under a floating mezzanine.

Huge glass sliding doors peel back to combine the family room with the enclosed verandah that features a unique round swimming hole and leafy gardens.

Natural light pours in through the original windows and clear roof with exposed beams that offers a glimpse of the old ‘Vita-Brits’ logo.

The upper level houses a chic master bedroom that has an open ensuite with black marble flooring to match the sleek storage cabinets and room dividers.

Red curtains wrap round the guest bedroom on the mezzanine adding a pop of colour to the family room while an airy home study sits outside it.

The state-of-the-art property, designed by Perth architecture firm spaceagency, was shortlisted at this year’s prestigious Houses Awards in the Homes in a Heritage Context category.

It also earned the prize for Interior Architecture and Residential Architecture for alterations and additions at the 2023 West Australian Architecture Awards.

On Instagram, spaceagency said the Weeties factory was no ordinary warehouse and labelled it a Fremantle icon.

‘The design makes full use of the warehouse’s height, assembling three layers of rooms, a leafy courtyard, and a lofty, double volume living space,’ the post read.

‘The detailing across the project is elegant and precise, striking a balance between the rawness of the warehouse’s heritage and an elevated refinement.’
