In-demand Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has admitted he would like to play for Barcelona in order to join up with Frenkie De Jong again.

De Ligt is linked with several leading European clubs after a superb season with the Dutch giants, winning the Eredivisie and domestic cup titles, as well as reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

The 19-year-old Ajax captain and Dutch international was awarded player of the season by Dutch football magazine Voetbal Primeur on Monday evening, ahead of team mates Hakim Ziyech in second place and De Jong in third.

Midfielder De Jong agreed a £75million transfer to Barca last January, and will move to the Nou Camp this summer.

Barca have also been among the clubs chasing De Ligt, and he admitted that a move is enticing – but nothing has been confirmed yet.

De Ligt told Voetbal Primeur: ‘I think I voted for Frenkie. I think he has developed very well this year. He deserves the move to Barcelona.

‘Will I play with him there? It would be nice to play with Frenkie in a team, but I don’t know if it will happen’.

Ajax are preparing for De Ligt’s departure after confirming the signing of Argentine centre back Lisandro Martinez on Tuesday.

Manchester City are also among the clubs chasing De Ligt, however Liverpool have pulled out of the running as they aim to bolster their attacking options instead.
