Oprah has responded with bewilderment to the president’s insulting critique of her 60 Minutes segment last week.
Appearing on her friend Ellen DeGeneres’s show on Thursday, she shrugged in disbelief when asked what she thought of his complaint that it was ‘biased and slanted’.
‘I don’t like giving negativity power so I just thought, “what?”‘ the 64-year-old explained.
The 60 Minutes episode showed Oprah interviewing a panel of voters who she had spoken to a year ago at the beginning of the Trump presidency.
The episode’s tone was that the country remained divided.
Trump watched it and complained about it on Twitter afterwards, writing: ‘Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes.
Oprah reacted with bewilderment on her friend Ellen DeGeneres’s show on Thursday after being asked about the president’s comment that she was ‘insecure’
‘The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!’
His comment about her ‘running’ was in reference to speculation that she may launch a political career, hopeful claims which she has denied.
On Thursday, Oprah said she actually took the president’s critique to heart and went back to review the episode to look for anywhere in the interview that his comment may have applied.
‘I watched all the tapes, I called the producer because what actually happened was, when you do 60 Minutes you sit in a room with at least seven other people who critique the piece before you air it, before you give the introduction to it.
‘They critique every word and is this fair – you have a whole panel of people looking at whether it is fair.
‘The first time I saw it I said there’s something missing, here from the conversation, when I’d asked the question – do you think, do you care about what other people think about America.
On February 18, Trump tweeted about the 60 Minutes show which she hosted
Winfrey spoke with a handful of voters and asked them for their views on the president
She was wide ranging and listened to both sides of the debate
‘And they’d only used the Democratic side and I said I remember the guy Matt had said no, we’re the only people who are worried about what other countries are thinking of us.
‘So I said, “I think you should go back and put that in cause it makes it more balanced.”
‘I was working very hard to do the opposite of what I was hate tweeted about so, it’s OK,’ she said.
The episode gave arguments from both pro-Trump and anti-Trump voters.
It began with the comments of two people who said they were happy with the president and what he has achieved so far.
Winfrey sparked wild speculation that a future presidential run was on the cards when she gave a rousing speech at the Golden Globes last month.
Fans around the country rejoiced at the prospect that she may throw her hat in the ring.
On Thursday, Oprah said she had worked hard to do the ‘opposite’ of what Trump accused
Oprah had a sympathetic ear in Ellen DeGeneres who she is friends and neighbors with in Montecito
In 1999, Trump had a more favorable opinion of her. He said he would select her as his ‘first choice’ for a running mate if he ever ran for president.
‘Oprah! I love Oprah. Oprah would always be my first choice.
‘She’s really a great woman though, she’s really a terrific woman she is somebody who’s very special,’ he told Larry King at the time.
She herself has said multiple times that she has no designs for the White House.
‘That’s not for me. I don’t have the DNA for it,’ was one of her most recent comments about it in January.
