Queen Letizia of Spain goes understated in recycled sapphire Carolina Herrera

Queen Letizia of Spain was the picture of understated elegance today as she stepped out with her husband, King Felipe, to celebrate the winner of a prestigious literature prize.

For the second time this week Letizia, 49, recycled a dress she’d worn before and stunned in a sapphire blue midi dress designed by Carolina Herrera.

She paired it with blue patent stilettos as she attended the event at the University of Alcalá in Madrid.

The Spanish monarch, who married King Felipe II in 2004 after working as a TV reporter for 10 years, flashed a smile at the camera while sporting a chic, understated look.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain appeared in excellent spirits this morning as they arrived at the Miguel de Cervantes Literature Prize 2021 in Spanish Language at the University of Alcalá de Henares in Madrid

Despite being married for nearly two decades, cameras captured the Queen’s adoring gaze into her husband’s eyes, as if the pair were newlyweds.

Tucking her brunette locks behind her ear, Letizia showed a simple pair of small hoops and wore a gold ring on her forefinger. She opted for a nude lip with a touch of bronze on her eyelids for a finely polished look.

The King and Queen have spent the past few days meeting with journalists and literary giants at the annual award ceremony for the Miguel de Cervantes Prize.

This year the prestigious lifetime achievement award has been given to Uruguayan novelist Cristina Peri Rossi.

The 80-year-old writer has more than 37 works to her name including novels and poetry and is most well-known for her novel The Ship of Fools, published in 1984.

The Miguel de Cervantes Prize is considered the most coveted literary award in Spanish literature. The official ceremony takes place every year on 23 April.

Yesterday the pair hosted a luncheon for journalists and writers from around the world to celebrate Spanish literature.

Again, Letizia opted to recycle an outfit she’d worn before – a powder blue midi dress with pink and red floral embroidery designed by Manuel Pertegaz, matched with a pair of pink pumps.

The couple appeared in deep conversation as they arrived. Letizia folded her navy jacket, which was wet with raindrops

Queen Letizia, who gifted her husband a classic book when they got engaged, famously met King Felipe while working as a journalist and was asked to interview him.

After a fairytale romance the pair announced their engagement in November 2003. The then Prince of Asturias popped the question with a 16-baguette diamond ring.

After divorcing her first husband in 1999, Letizia, whose parents are both journalists, spent the next few years covering major news stories including live reporting of 9/11 in 2001.

Her impressive career saw her work for CNN+, Mexican publication Siglo 21, and Spanish TV channel 24 Horas, where she anchored the Telediario 2 evening news bulletin.

She is known for being one of the most pro-newspaper royals in Europe and regularly attends journalist award ceremonies.

The couple have two daughters together – Crown Princess Leonor, 16, and Infanta Sofia, 14.
