A mother has revealed how using essential oils to protect her 10-year-old daughter from getting head lice made her hair grow down to her calves.

Australian mother Patti said her daughter Mia was riddled with head lice for the first time at the age of two when she returned home from daycare with constant itching.

She began using a combination of lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree and rosemary oils in her hair every morning – a natural home remedy she strongly believes ward off head lice for good and promote hair growth for more than five years.

Appearing on SBS Medicine or Myth? Patti said her daughter no longer leaves the house without using the ‘all natural head lice hair repellent’.

Every morning, she would spray her daughter's locks before running her fingers through her hair, gently massaging the essential oils in. Mia has not had lice ever since using the remedy

How does rosemary oil work for hair growth?

Rosemary oil is said to be one of the best natural treatments for enhancing hair growth.

The oil is believed to increase cellular metabolism that stimulates growth, thickness and even prevent hair loss.

‘Tea tree is the [active ingredient] that kills the actual live lice and kills the eggs. You could use [tea tree] alone but your hair would be like straw,’ Patti said.

‘So rosemary and lavender make it a bit softer and helps the hair growth as well. But you have to be very persistent. It’s got to be [used] every day.’

To make the home remedy, Patti said she would add five drops of each oil – lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree and rosemary – in a spray bottle with water.

Next, she would spray her daughter’s luscious brunette locks before running her fingers through her hair, gently massaging the essential oils in.

The mother said the remedy will only work if you use it every day.

‘It’s a lot of work but well worth it. Our all natural head lice repellent wards off head lice completely. This has been preventative for us for five and a half years,’ she said.

Speaking about her daughter’s first encounter with the head lice as a toddler, Patti said: ‘It was horrendous, I got them too. It took a long time to get rid of them.

‘It was awful. So I went back to the teachers, and the teacher passed [remedy] on to me. So ever since then, we’ve had no head lice because we’ve used this remedy.’

Mia amazed the panel of Australian renowned doctors, including Dr Charlie Teo, as she unveiled her long luscious locks in front of them.

‘It’s down to my calf muscles,’ she said.

Dr Teo – who has four daughters – said dealing with the head lice spiralled into a six year ordeal in his family household.

‘It was not only a burden socially, but a burden physically,’ Dr Teo said.

‘I mean the cost of treating a child with lice is just… and it’s an ongoing problem. We had it for easily six years.’

Despite being amazed by the repellent, the doctors said the remedy ‘certainly works’ from a ‘scientific perspective’ but they didn’t see a trial working.
