Tories spend £3,000 a day on Facebook adverts promoting Boris Johnson’s Brexit plans

  • Tories spent £86,020 on its targeted advertising in just 30 days until August 17
  • That is almost £3,000 daily and more than over the previous 60 days (£54,603)
  • The total is more than three times that spent by Labour (£23,135) in same period
  • Lib Dems top over past 90 days (£151,137), but £4,027 in 30 days to August 17
  • Brexit Party cut spending – £11,461 in past 30 days, after £83,155 over 90 days

The Conservative Party has ramped up Facebook advertising as Boris Johnson seeks support for his Brexit plans.

Data from the social media giant shows the Tories spent £86,020 on its targeted advertising in 30 days to August 17. 

That is almost £3,000 daily and more than over the previous 60 days (£54,603).

The 30-day total is more than three times that spent by Labour (£23,135) in the same period. 

The Lib Dems were top over the past 90 days with £151,137, but spent just £4,027 in 30 days to August 17.

The Brexit Party also cut its spending – £11,461 in the past 30 days, after £83,155 over 90 days.

Many of the Tory Facebook adverts targeted opponents, including Sarah Wollaston. One aimed at her constituents in Totnes, Devon, read: ‘Should your MP, Sarah Wollaston, be ignoring your vote to leave the EU? Tell her Yes or No now.’

Brexit opponent Miss Wollaston left the Conservatives to form Change UK in February, before switching to the Lib Dems.

Another read: ‘Jeremy Corbyn, Jo Swinson and Nicola Sturgeon want to pick and choose which votes they respect – ignoring the 17.4 million Leave votes.’
