Greg Fusco died on Sunday, two weeks after he was taken to the hospital because he was hit in the head with a softball

A newlywed died on Sunday, two weeks after he was taken to the hospital because he was hit in the head with a softball.

Greg Fusco, from Palm Harbor, Florida, was struck in the left temple by a line drive while he was pitching during a softball tournament near Jacksonville on December 2, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

The 37-year-old softball fanatic was first knocked out by the hit, but regained consciousness before an ambulance arrived.

Nevertheless he was airlifted to the University of Florida Health Jacksonville for what doctors first thought would be non-life-threatening injuries.

‘His vitals looked good and he was able to squeeze his wife’s hand, so we did think he was going to make a recovery,’ family friend Courtney Hinkle told WTSP.

He was initially rushed into surgery, and his wife, Taylor, said she thought things were looking up.

‘I was worried, but I was confident,’ a friend told the Times.

But complications from the hit caused him to die two weeks later, just two days before his one-month anniversary with his wife, Taylor.

But then his condition took a turn for the worse.

His official cause of death hasn’t yet been determined, but according to a GoFundMe set up to help for his medical expenses he suffered from a shattered skull, a blood clot and active bleeding.

Fusco suffered an unrelated head injury earlier in the morning of the accident, which would have caused a higher risk of complication, according to WTSP.

‘He was the player everybody wanted on his team because he was a great guy,’ Mike Ogliaruso, a police lieutenant who used to play with Fusco told the Times.

Their engagement, too, was softball riddled – he got down on one knee on the diamond after a tournament and presented the ring to her in a halved ball.
